The Secure Order Process

The following section describes how the advanced security of our online order process works, from start to finish.

  1. Starting your order

Every order at shermans.com is secure, and clicking the Checkout button is all it takes to get started. The security features are automatic; you don’t need to do anything special to invoke them.

  1. Making a Positive ID

Once you’ve clicked the Checkout button, your browser looks for a digital certificate to confirm that it is communicating with shermans.com. After a positive ID has been made, your order continues.

We use VeriSign software to enable the use of digital certificates. For your security, the verification process happens in the background every time you place an order on our site.

  1. Entering Secure Mode

Next, your computer and our server begin communicating in secure mode, which means that data is sent back and forth in an encrypted format that cannot be read by any other computer while in transit.

At this point you may see a pop-up window like the one to the right which some browsers display when you are about to receive a secure document. It’s fine to click “OK” (or “Continue”) to proceed. This simply confirms that you will begin receiving pages in a highly secure encrypted format.

During the checkout process, after your browser has entered secure mode, we’ll ask you to enter your credit card information. The encryption features of browser software are exceptionally powerful and ensure the security of this data as it is transmitted to our server. Our site uses the latest technology to maintain the highest level of security.

  1. My Order is Complete. What Happens Next?

Security measures continue even after you’ve placed your order, as we process your order on a highly secure internal system that is inaccessible via the Internet.

Older Web Browsers

If you use Netscape Communicator (Navigator) version 4.05 or earlier, or Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.01 for Macintosh, you may encounter a security warning when you visit a secure page at any Web site after December 31, 1999. The warning is generated in error and is caused by a software problem (Y2K) in these browsers. The browser problem does not affect the security of your connection to our site.

How You Can Tell You are in Secure Mode

The most popular Web browsers, Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator (Navigator), use clear visual symbols to let you know whether or not they are in secure mode. Most recent versions of these browsers display a locked padlock either at the bottom left or bottom right of your browser window when they are connected to our site in secure mode.

Another indication that a browser is in secure mode can be found in the Web site address that your browser displays. The address will begin http:// in standard, non-secure mode and will change to https:// in secure mode. The “s” stands for secure.

Continuing to Browse After Checkout

Once your order is complete, it’s perfectly safe for you to continue to browse our site in standard mode. In fact, once you exit from the checkout process, your browser will automatically revert to this slightly faster mode of communication. You may see a pop-up window like the one to the right as you leave the checkout process. It's fine to click "Yes" (or "Continue") to proceed.
